Sony is introducing its new 8-megapixel DSC-H9 and DSC-H7 models. Designed to appeal to families with budding athletes in their broods, the cameras debut Sony’s new advanced sports shooting mode.

This mode combines high shutter speed shooting and intelligent continuous auto-focusing. The cameras can quickly focus on fast-moving subjects by predicting where those subjects will be in the frame. This predictive technology also helps to reduce shutter lag, the time it takes for the camera to focus and shoot.

Features

8.1-megapixel Super HADâ„¢ CCD: Higher megapixels give you more detail and definition for large prints and cropping in on your subject. The Super HAD (Hole Accumulated Diode) CCD design allows more light to pass to each pixel, increasing sensitivity and reducing noise.

15x optical zoom: The Carl Zeiss® 15x optical zoom lens helps bring distant subjects closer and lets you frame shots for better composition. An additional 2x digital zoom lets you zoom in close without jagged edges.

76x Smart Zoomâ„¢: Sony’s Smart Zoom feature lets you magnify your subject by intelligently cropping into the central portion of the scene, thus avoiding the image distortion of other digital zooms.

Image stabilization: Super SteadyShot® optical image stabilization fights motion blur, even during longer exposures at full zoom.

Face Detection: Automatically control focus, exposure, color and flash and reveal faces in shadow, make skin tones look more natural and eliminate harsh facial glare. This brings out every expression on every face in every shot, so you’ll capture the personalities and emotions that make memories come alive.

In-camera retouching: Add creative effects to photos after you shoot. Included effects are soft edge filter to soften backgrounds, cross filter to place starry “dazzles” at highlight points, partial color filter to mute surrounding colors and fish-eye filter to create interesting results. You can also reduce irritating red eyes that can ruin even the most creative photos at the touch of a button.

Advanced Sports mode: To capture fast-moving subjects in split-second detail, the DSC-H7 provides a sports shooting mode that combines high shutter speed (1/4000 sec.) with intelligent continuous AF that responds more quickly to rapid motion. This is a great way to catch the perfect moment in sports, children’s games, pet tricks and more.

2.5 ” LCD screen: The DSC-H7 has a bright 2.5 ” LCD screen with a one touch “Play” button that makes it quick and easy to view your photos.

High sensitivity mode: A High Sensitivity Mode (ISO 3200) allows you to shoot with great results in low-light conditions. Sony’s original Clear RAW NR™ (Noise Reduction) image processing technology helps suppress the color noise that can accompany high-sensitivity shooting.

Simple controls: User-friendly controls and simple on-screen function guide text/icon displays help you set up camera functions with ease.

HD output: Present your pictures with direct HD (high definition) output to compatible HDTV screens so you can view DSC-H7 still photos in spectacular HD clarity and detail. Plus, watch as your photos come alive on compatible HDTV screens, accompanied by your choice of visual effects and any of four preset musical selections stored in memory or your favorite MP3 tunes downloaded from PC to your camera for use as background music.

31MB internal memory: With 31MB of internal memory, you can capture, store and share pictures in-camera, without using a flash memory card. Use optional Memory Stick Duoâ„¢ or Memory Stick PRO Duoâ„¢ media (sold separately) for ultra-compact, high-capacity shooting and recording.

The DSC-H7 is also equipped with Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization to help minimize blur caused by camera shake, an important feature when shooting at slow shutter speeds at full zoom. The high sensitivity of the camera (up to ISO3200) further helps to reduce blur resulting from fast-moving subjects and will also help preserve the mood of your pictures by capturing well-exposed, natural-looking photos, even in challenging low-light conditions.

The cameras’ Advanced Sports Mode with high shutter speed is perfect for crisp long shots and for capturing precise detail when shooting at sporting events. Intelligent continuous auto-focusing means that the camera can quickly focus on fast-moving subjects by predicting where those subjects will be in the frame.

The H-series cameras incorporate selectable in-camera editing functions so you can spend more time on the field and less time behind a computer. Equipped with Sony’s Dynamic Range Optimizer, originally developed for the Alpha digital SLR system, the new cameras can analyze captured image data and instantly determine the best exposure and tonality of each picture before JPEG compression.

Other helpful in-camera functions include red-eye correction and photo retouching effects with filters. You can create fun and artistic photos with up to four filter selections, such as the partial color filter that can highlight your star athlete in color while the background of the photo is in black-and-white.

For more creative freedom, a simple wheel dial control lets you quickly change camera settings in manual modes (shutter speed priority, aperture priority, manual exposure) and also control ISO sensitivity, focus area, and exposure value. In play mode, the wheel dial provides a quick way to view your next or previous shot. A powerful flash provides extra illumination to light up subjects from your camera, with precise light control and the ability to adjust flash for both front and rear sync when shooting at a low-speed sync setting. Because an off-center subject can make your shot more interesting, the DSCH7 can measure auto-focus precision at 9 points on your screen, giving you greater creative freedom to compose your image.
