The GX-10 is Samsung’s first DSLR to be positioned firmly towards the discerning enthusiast photographer searching for comprehensive functions, stunning design, ease of use and real value for money - all in one camera. The GX-10 boasts a 10.2 mega-pixel image sensor, offering the photographer a sharper image, with richer colours for a truly compelling composition. Taking photos is made easier due to the PentaPrism viewfinder with its high magnification (0.95x) to provide a clearer, wider field of view (95%) for optimum shooting.

For unrivalled viewing of photos the GX-10 also comes complete with a wide view 2.5 TFT LCD (210k pixels). With its powerful built-in Optical Picture Stabilization (OPS) technology, the GX-10 prevents blurred pictures by shifting the CCD to counter any movement of the camera’s body. OPS also uses the lens information to ensure results remain sharp every time. The advanced design features of the GX-10 ensure it is robust enough for taking quality pictures even in wet, sandy or dusty conditions as the camera comes equipped with a special water-proof and anti-dust coating. The advanced dust removal function included in the GX-10 also removes potentially problematic dust from the CCD by vibrating it automatically when the camera is booted, resulting in perfect blemish-free pictures with minimum effort on the part of the photographer. A further dust barrier is provided by the special coating on the CCD’s protective window. With the one-touch RAW button, built into the GX-10, RAW file shooting is made simple and instantly available to users even during general JPEG shooting. The RAW files can be checked on the LCD and then be directly converted to JPEG format via the built-in converter for convenience. With the GX-10, continuous shooting at 3 fps (frames per second) is possible; RAW files can be shot at the same speed up to 9 frames; giving the user the best chance to get a great picture. The GX-10 has been designed to let the photographer customize and take control of their camera with the My Set Dial option allowing you to personalise your dial settings by choosing your most frequently used functions for ultimate ease of use.

After enjoying something of a renaissance for its compact camera range, Samsung has also found a way into the digital SLR market by re-badging a series of Pentax models. A Samsung representative has assured me that the company will soon launch a DSLR of its own original design, but in the meantime the re-badging tactic provides the company with a bridgehead from which it can build brand familiarity. I’ve already taken a look at the entry-level GX-1L, which started life as the Pentax *ist DL, but this week it’s the turn of Samsung’s latest offering, the GX-10. This is a bit unusual for me, since the GX-10 is a re-badged version of Pentax’s latest top-of-the-range DSLR the K10D, a camera which I have yet to review. I’ve been after Pentax to send me a review sample since the K10D was launched at the end of last year, but Samsung has beaten them to it. I don’t mind too much, since either way I get to play with a nice new camera, but it does mean that I will not be comparing the performance of the two models, since I haven’t handled the Pentax version.

Unsurprisingly, the GX-10’s performance results look remarkably similar to the K10D’s. Its time-to-first shot and typical shutter lag of about half a second come in around the average, and difficulty autofocusing in dim light results in a 1.6 second lag in suboptimal environments. At half a second, JPEG and raw shot-to-shot speed also fall in the middle of the pack, though its 3.1fps continuous shooting clip elevates it a bit above the budget crowd. I also ran into the same occasional focus lock issues–usually during close-ups–where it would rock back and forth quickly for a few iterations, as if trying to decide whether it was satisfied. Most of the time, I fell into a rhythm with it, as you do with any good camera, but occasionally missed a shot waiting for it to catch up.

The camera has optical image stabilization along with CCD cleaning features and comes with a D-XENON 18-55 mm lens in the configuration I tested. One huge issue I had with the lens is a tiny tab that stuck up from the tail end of the lens. One tab controls the aperture and was just begging to be be snapped off during a quick lens change. I didn’t get a chance to look at any of the other D-XENON lenses available, but if I were a professional photographer that small detail could be a showstopper.

Saving options are limited to JPEG or 16-bit TIFF, which creates files that are about 57MB in size. The main window of Digimax RAW Converter carries adjustments for fitting the viewed image in the window, displaying it at 1:1 size, enlarging a selected portion of the picture and moving the enlarged section. You can also use the eyedropper tool to adjust the colour balance of the shot by clicking on a neutral hue and rotate the image clockwise or anti-clockwise. A magnifying slider with plus and minus settings is located in the top right corner, while a Picture Tray column runs down the right side of the main window.

Straightforward to use, Digimax RAW Converter should suit most photographers who require a capable raw file converter. Missing functions include cropping and straightening controls but these actions can be performed in editing software after the raw files have been converted.
