The Samsung Digimax S800 combines an eight megapixel CCD imager and a Samsung SHD-branded 3x optical zoom lens with a fairly standard 35 - 105mm equivalent focal range. For framing images, the S800 forgoes any form of optical viewfinder - increasingly rare on digicams these days - in favor of a large 2.4″ LCD display with 112,000 pixels. The lack of an optical viewfinder, while not unusual, is a shame since they add a good degree of versatility - letting you get the shot when you can’t make out the LCD in bright sunlight, or save battery life by disabling the LCD when accurate framing isn’t vital.

Exposure compensation covers a range of plus or minus 2EV in 1/2-stop increments. Most cameras offer 1/3-stop increments, for a finer degree of control. Similarly, the Digimax S800’s manual shutter and aperture adjustments use 1/2-stop steps, though again, that’s still more control than most cameras in this price range. If you really want to be safe, you can set the S800 to automatically bracket exposures, in which case it will shoot three shots in succession: one normally exposed, one at 0.5EV, and one at minus 0.5EV. Metering options include multi, which averages readings from throughout the image area with an emphasis on the middle, and spot, which measures only the center of the image

The Samsung Digimax S800 digital camera has a larger LCD screen (2.4 inch) for clearer picture quality. Printing out pictures is easy via PictBridge which enables an image to be printed directly to a connected compatible printer, without the need of a PC or notebook. Samsung S800, from the ‘S’ series, a digital camera range for the entire family, features video capabilities (MPEG4, VGA, 30fps) which means it can even double as a camcorder. Advanced features allow “in camera” movie editing and a pause function during recording.

The ‘S’ series comes with an Effect Key allowing the user to adjust the colour of the photos being taken and also add various creative effects. The range also has an easy mode dial that allows the user to move between portrait, night pictures, and movies, swiftly, depending on the situation.
