The PENTAX K10D offers advanced photo enthusiasts an array of innovations in image capture technology and camera functionality. These include a 10.2 megapixel CCD contained within the PENTAX developed Shake Reduction system that offers 2.5 to 4 stops of compensation for shooting in low light or with telephoto lenses. The new PRIME image processing engine is supported by 22-bit A/D conversion for truer color tones with richer gradation, and an improved buffer memory that increases capture speed and allows for in camera image processing. The Pentax K10D is one of the more interesting SLR cameras currently on the market. Pentax has obviously put a lot of thought into its flagship model, adding a number of features that set it apart from its competitors, cameras such as the Canon EOS 30D and Nikon D80. The 10 megapixel K10D has a Shake Reduction system built into the body, offering 2 to 4 stops of shutter-speed compensation for virtually all Pentax lenses. There’s also a new Dust Removal system to prevent dust from sticking to the surface of the CCD image sensor.

The K10D’s auto sensitivity control function automatically sets the optimum sensitivity up to ISO 1600, based on such data as the subject’s brightness level and the lens’ focal length. Since this function allows the use of higher shutter speeds in poor lighting situations (such as indoor sports events and night scenes), it helps the photographer to effectively reduce camera shake and prevent blurred images. For specialized applications, the sensitivity can be set manually from ISO 100 to ISO 1600.

The K10D is equipped to make camera operations simple and effortless, from the multi-function four-way controller to the responsive electronic select dial and the large, easy-to-use mode dial, all the switches and dials are efficiently and functionally laid out around the compact body to assure smooth, fingertip control. The K10D can record the action at 3 frames per second continuously until the memory card is full when shooting in JPEG mode or up to 9 frames in Raw mode.

The LCD screen on the K10D’s rear deck can’t be used as a viewfinder (like it is with point & shoot digital cameras) because the mirror used to reflect the image resolved by the lens blocks the light path (preventing the transmission of a live image feed). The K10D’s LCD screen, like the LCD screens on the vast majority of digital SLRs, is used for menu navigation and post-exposure image review. The K10D’s full info 2.5” (210,000 pixel) TFT LCD screen is bright (brightness levels can be adjusted), hue accurate, and shows almost 100% of the image frame.
