The FE-200’s biggest selling point is its lens, a nice, wide 28mm-to-140mm (35mm equivalent) zoom lens that gives it the best range of the FE-series. Plus, its digital image stabilization mode (not to be confused with the more effective optical or mechanical image stabilization, found in pricier cameras) helps reduce shaking when zooming in.

These new FE-series cameras feature an enhanced Help Guide that makes digital photography simple for users of all levels. A tutorial “shooting guide” educates users on tips for achieving specific effects, such as “shooting into backlight” and “adjusting coloration.” The shooting guide not only provides detailed descriptions for various photographic scenarios, but also actually sets the camera with the touch of a button, making the transition from learning to doing instantaneous.

One of four new additions to the line a year later, the Olympus FE-200, features an Olympus-branded f3.3 - f4.8, 5x optical zoom lens with a useful 28mm wide angle. The Olympus FE-200 couples this with a 6.0 megapixel imager and 2.5″ LCD display that has 150,000 pixels.

The FE-200 has its good points: a 2.5″, 150,000-pixel screen, a li-ion battery and 5x zoom lens, all wrapped in a smart metal case, which is impressive at this price. The lens is particularly welcome, extending further than the usual 3x zoom. However, its impressive features don’t add up to high picture quality. Detail was soft at best, and the unreliable auto-focus and poorly judged automatic settings meant that most pictures were hopelessly blurry. With no manual controls, we couldn’t compensate for the problems.

Photos and movie clips created using the FE-200 are saved to either the cameras internal memory or an optional xD-Picture Card. The camera is supplied with Olympus Master Software, which makes easy work of downloading, organising, editing and printing images using a computer.
The FE-200 offers everything expected from an entry-level camera and more – style, simplicity, imaging power, affordability, plus the amazing versatility of a 5x wide-angle zoom. Overall, it’s a tough package to beat.
