The E-410 offers ease-of-shooting and greater flexibility with the Live View LCD. Composing photographs is easier as subjects can be seen on the Live View LCD, which offers a wide 176-degree viewing angle. This enables images to be effortlessly taken from angles that would typically be difficult with a traditional optical viewfinder — which is still the only option on many competing digital SLR cameras. Interacting with subjects, such as toddlers and pets, is also possible thanks to the Live View LCD, which enables pictures to be taken while holding the camera away from your face.
The E-410’s big and bright 2.5-inch LCD display with approximately 230,000 pixels includes HyperCrystal technology, which offers many times the contrast of conventional LCD monitors, and enables images to be beautifully displayed in vivid color — both in preview and playback. The HyperCrystal LCD also provides a wide viewing angle, which ensures images can be composed from even the most obscure angles. The larger LCD makes viewing icons and text on the camera’s menu a squint-free process.
Coupled with the underwater housing, the Live View LCD also makes underwater photography easy, where looking through a traditional optical viewfinder is extremely inconvenient.
Features
* Ten megapixel Live MOS Image Sensor (provides Full Time Live-View)
* Auto Focus in Live View (although still requires live view freeze and mirror flap)
* TruePic III processor (faster, better image quality, better noise reduction)
* Shadow Adjustment Technology (as a play mode filter)
* Improved continuous shooting; still 3 fps but unlimited at JPEG HQ or 7 RAW
* No warning message at higher sensitivities (E-400 warned from ISO 800 upwards)

The camera we have been supplied with for review is labelled ‘pre-production’ by Olympus . However, it was supplied in a store-ready box, in twin-lens kit form (bundled with the 14-42 standard kit lens and the 40-150 kit telephoto zoom) and have been assured by Olympus that the camera is representative of final production models, and image quality can be safely judged with this camera. However, we note that the camera’s firmware version number is ‘0.0′ and we expect final shipping versions to have version 1.0 installed.

The new Olympus E-410 is one of the feat of arms with which Olympus is claiming their market share this year. Moreover the Olympus E-510 and a new professional SLR camera are expected this summer. Olympus seem to be able to offer a strong assortment with these three FourThirds system cameras. They all look very promising on paper in any case. The compact size of the Olympus E410 tempts you to take the camera with you all the time. The size also invites you to use one of the smallest memory cards available from Olympus’ own kitchen: the xD Picture Card. However; the Olympus E-410 is equipped with a dual card slot, so not only the xD card is supported but also the CompactFlash memory card.

The E-410 is the smallest digital SLR on the market. Yes, smaller than both the Nikon D40 and Canon Rebel XTi. The camera has a metal frame with a hard plastic shell, and it feels very solid in your hands. It doesn’t have much of a grip, so I highly recommend trying one out in person before you buy it, especially if you have large hands. Or, consider the E-510, which has a much more substantial grip.

One of the smallest and lightest D-SLRs with Live Preview in the world, the E-410 gives photographers a decisive advantage. Matched with a range of ultra-compact lenses, this camera allows for virtually unimpeded mobility. It is therefore ideal for taking along on trips, holidays, photo assignments or, for that matter, to just about any shooting situation where a large, bulky camera set-up might compromise the photo opportunities.

The EVOLT E-410 is extremely portable, measuring 5.1 inches (129.5mm) by 3.58 inches (91mm) and 2.1 inches (53mm), excluding protrusions, and weighing 13.4 ounces (380 grams) body only. The new camera has a classic penta-mirror design that is light and compact enough to comfortably shoot with all day. Beyond its portable size, the E-410 delivers unparalleled ease of use — from menus that make sense and buttons on the body that are easy to understand and operate, to automatic settings for every imaginable situation.
