The D40’s new Retouch menu offers exclusive in-camera image editing features that add to the D40’s “fun factor†by providing greater creativity without the need for a computer. Included in the Retouch menu is Nikon’s D-Lighting, which brightens dark pictures and Red-eye correction that automatically detects and corrects red eye – a common condition that occurs in flash photography. Image Trim allows for creative cropping of an image and creates smaller files for easy e-mailing. Other creative features include Image Overlay, Small Picture, Monochrome (Black-and-white, Sepia, Cyanotype) and Filter Effects (Skylight, Warm filter, Color balance).
The D40 comes packaged with the new 3X zoom 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor lens that assures superb picture sharpness and optimum contrast, along with the versatility to capture everything from tight portraits to wide-angle landscapes. The Nikon D40 is an all new affordable, compact, point-and-shoot digital SLR from Nikon, it follows on from the D50 but at a significantly lower price point and with a subtly different feature set. The biggest news however is probably fact that Nikon resisted the temptation to keep chasing megapixels (hooray for that) and instead appear to have concentrated on what makes a good camera, a decent viewfinder, short shutter lag, very short viewfinder blackout. They’ve trimmed some of the ‘less important features’ (you can’t change the exposure steps for example) but have squeezed a range of new features such as custom Auto ISO which we welcomed with the D80.

Nikon is making a particularly aggressive move with the D40, which costs less than its predecessor, the D50, but is designed to appeal to a wider range of people. Headline specs include a 6.1-megapixel CCD, a 64mm (2.5-inch) LCD, three-point autofocus and an 18-55mm 3x optical zoom lens. Ease-of-use features range from scene modes and built-in help to a graphical interface that gives visual feedback on the camera settings. If you struggle to remember that f/2 is a large aperture and f/16 a small one, you’ll like this option, which shows the aperture blades closing as the f-stop increases. The D40 measures 126mm by 64mm by 94mm and weighs about 475g, although that’s without useful add-ons such as a lens, battery and memory card.

The pop-up flash unit has a guide number of 17 at ISO200 in metres and covers an 18mm lens. However, the camera will not act as a commander for the Creative Lighting System and leaves the flash as a simple pop-up unit. At the 18mm setting on the new AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.6-5.6G ED II lens, the flash did start to show vignetting towards the corners on an off white wall. For the most part of the range though, it proved accurate and can be used in four modes, auto flash, red-eye reduction, slow-sync and rear curtain sync, and the camera has an impressive flash sync speed of 1/500sec.
