Hewlett Packard has delivered another excellent performer with the introduction of the Photosmart 7760. This home and small office printer can be used with a PC or Mac or as a standalone printer with the built in memory card reader and the 1.8-inch color LCD display.The HP Photosmart 7760 is a thermal injet printer intended for printing black and white documents as well as high quality pictures. The unit features 16MB of internal memory and boasts up to 4800-optimized DPI in color prints and up to 1200-rendered DPI in black and white print.

The control panel’s 1.8-inch LCD displays either photos or menu commands, and the flash-memory card slots on the front of the printer read all common media-card formats. You can connect an HP digital camera to the USB 2.0 port beside the card slots. From the LCD’s menus, you select the images to print and the quality, size, and number of copies. Also, you can rotate pictures, add simple frames, date- and time-stamp them, and tweak color and contrast. The LCD can display tiny thumbnails of nine images at a time from the cards.

The PhotoSmart 7760 offers two USB ports–one on the back for connection to your PC or Mac and one on the front for plug-and-play connection to compatible cameras or even your laptop. Print speeds are variable, depending on the speed/quality mode selected, and range from up to 13 ppm for black printing (Fast Draft mode) to approximately 116 seconds for a 4-by-6-inch photo print (Best mode). Print speeds can be increased with the addition of the optional HP no. 56 black print cartridge.

Unlike many so-called direct photo printers, the new HP Photosmart 7760 offers an excellent range of standalone features. For starters, there’s a five-slot media card reader, conveniently stashed away under a flap on the top panel, which supports no less than 11 different formats of memory card. Better still, there’s no need to print an index sheet to see what photos are on the card, because there’s a full colour LCD panel that doubles as a menu display and preview panel for viewing photos.
