you’re thinking of buying a new camera, the chances are that you’re considering one of the big brands you’ve often heard of, such as Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus or Fujifilm. Maybe you’ll consider a Sony, a Panasonic or a Samsung, since you’ve heard they’re pretty good. However the chances are you’ll overlook the longest-established consumer digital camera brands of them all: Casio.

The superbly compact EX-S770 has clear intentions of continuing this trend. It’s one of the most stylish and slim models we’ve seen and, with a 7-megapixel CCD, it offers enough detail for most people. The sleek silver/grey exterior houses a wide range of control buttons, the sheer number of which appears a little daunting at first, but after spending a few minutes with the camera you discover that most are pretty well conceived.

The Exilim has a glossy, liquid finish with chrome intertwined. When you press the power button, the 38-114mm f/2.7- 5.2 3X optical zoom lens (35mm equivalent) telescopes outward, showing a mix of brushed and polished chrome with beveled edges. The camera’s rounded corners add to the elegance and the 2.8-inch LCD screen (230,400 pixels) finishes off the state-of-the-art appearance of this camera. The controls, although on the small side, feel precise when pressed, adding to the overall solid feel the camera has in your hands. Like the other cameras in Casio’s “Slim” line, the EX-S770 falls into the “Ultra Compact” size range and is only 0.7″ thick by 3.7″ wide by 2.4″ tall.

The attractive EX-S770 shoots 7.2-megapixel still images and records high-quality movies in MPEG-4 format. In addition, it features Casio’s Super Bright 2.8-inch wide-screen LCD, but still retains the ultra-slim card size of its predecessors. Its impressive wide-screen display employs a 230,000-pixel LCD that clearly displays images and information down to the smallest detail, and boasts a maximum brightness of around 1100cd/m2—more than bright enough to see outdoors on a sunny day. Casio has also added new functions to make the most of the EX-S770’s new wide screen.

The Casio Exilim EX-S770’s slim, stylish form is hard to beat. It’s colorful, completely metallic, and small enough to take anywhere. It delivered excellent performance in our lab tests. Unfortunately, its iffy photo quality dulls the camera’s overall glow. If you want an ultraslim shooter but don’t think the S770 is quite for you, the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-T50 offers optical image stabilization and higher ISO sensitivity for a bit more cash.

The better-than-average 230,400 pixels resolution makes it perfect for reviewing widescreen ratio MPEG-4 video (an AV cable is included so you can do the same on your TV). Attendant controls are minimal and require fingertip operation, but all the essentials are there.
Like other Casio’s, the S770 features a range of optimised scene modes – here called ‘Best Shot’ modes – that cover 35 common shooting conditions and subjects. Theoretically the camera selects the optimum aperture and shutter speed for everything from portraits to fireworks, leaving you to merely point and shoot.
