The Canon SD800 IS Digital ELPH features a compact, stylish case with rounded horizontal edges, and a retracting lens to make it pocket-friendly. The Canon SD800IS includes a 7.1 megapixel imager, and a Canon-branded 3.8x optical zoom lens covers an optimized range of 28-105mm equivalent, a good wide-angle to moderate telephoto.

With Canon’s new Face Detection AF/AE technology (working in concert with Canon’s 9-point Autofocus system), the Canon IXUS 850IS can detect, lock on and track up to nine human faces in a scene simply by pressing the shutter button halfway. The face detection algorithm automatically prioritizes and selects the optimum subject and not simply the closest face (based on Canon’s Intelligent Scene Analysis/iSAPS technology). It will then optimize the focus and exposure to ensure the best possible results for easy picture taking moments.

The 7-megapixel camera’s tiny body is shiny, curvy, and very attractive. But it may be just a bit too stylish for its own good. For instance, the power button is a tiny, illuminated half-oval built flush into the top panel; without actually pressing it, you might easily mistake it for an indicator light or a design flaw

Canon bundles a 16MB memory card with the SD800, which holds just four photos at the highest quality setting. That means that you’ll need to get your hands on a larger memory card right away. The SD800 can use Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMedia (MMC) cards, as well as the new SDHC format. I’d say that you should pick up a 1GB card at the very minimum. I’d also make sure that you get a “high speed card”, 60X or above, as the SD800 will definitely take advantage of it.

The IXUS 850 is designed as a snapshot camera for social use, so its controls and main options are fairly simple and straightforward. This is fortunate, because as usual Canon has neglected to include a full printed manual, opting instead for a printed 32-page basic guide with the full manual included on a CD.
