The PowerShot A640 and PowerShot A630 pack a vast array of advanced features into a remarkably compact space:

Review by PC Magazine

This slightly pricey, 8-megapixel compact isn’t super-trim and sexy, but it works very well in lots of situations. The PowerShot A630 packs an amazing array of useful features and is incredibly simple to operate. Despite the cost, there is plenty to love.
Two features make the Canon PowerShot A630 particularly easy to use and like: an articulating LCD and a glass viewfinder. Neither affects picture quality directly, but they have a lot to do with how you capture your pictures. And they are pretty rare finds in a compact camera.

An 8-megapixel version of the 10-megapixel PowerShot A640, the Canon PowerShot A630 is otherwise identical to its higher-resolution sibling. Both share the same sturdy, chunky body; 35mm-to-140mm-equivalent lens with accessory lens mount; and broad feature set with PASM exposure controls. Both cameras even turned in nearly identical performance results in our tests.

Samsung Pro815 Review

samsung

Description: The Pro815 equipped with a 15X optical zoom with a focal length of 28 – 420mm [35mm equivalent], this means you can shoot from wide angle to telephoto with one lens. Normally it is not possible to incorporate both 28mm wide-angle and 420mm tele-zoom capabilities in a average high-end camera, since they generally, only come with a 7-8X zoom, With SLR systems, different lenses need to be switched to shoot wide-angle and ultra high zoom pictures, this means carrying lots of equipment, missing some shots due to lens changeover and buying multiple lenses. The Pro815 has four low-dispersion glass lenses specially manufactured to minimize chromatic aberration that can occur when wide-angle and ultra high zoom are supported at the same time. In addition it employs two aspherical lenses for the correction of spherical aberration and lateral colours for the entire zoom range from wide to tele. This world-renowned Schneider-KREUZNACH lens offers outstanding reliability.

Specification
* 8megapixels 3264×2448pixels
* Schneider Kreuznach 15x optical zoom lens
* Massive 3.5inch Rear LCD
* Full manual control
* Records in RAW, TIFF and JPEG
* 11 scene modes
* 3 ring control system on the lens
* Movies with stereo sound
* Built-in flash. Guide No 13(ISO100/m)
* External flash capability
* Takes Compact Flash cards up to 4Gb

Review by PC Magazine

Because of its large size, when you first get your hands on the Samsung Pro815, you’ll probably think you’re holding a full D-SLR. In fact, it’s a little bigger than some D-SLRs, such as the Canon Rebel XT and the new Rebel XTi. This camera has some great features, but when it comes to the nuts and bolts of taking photos, using it is a hit-or-miss experience.
Take, for example, shutter lag. In my image tests, I didn’t find all that much to be upset about, but in my real-world low-light tests, I noticed significant lag, especially when the flash was turned off.

Samsung officially announced its first SLR-styled digital camera, the Pro815, an 8 megapixel, 15x zoom model back in June, but it didn’t actually arrive until the late autumn. It’s targeted at enthusiasts and boasts a lot of ‘world firsts’ including the largest LCD on a digital camera (3.5 inches), world’s longest zoom on a high-end camera and world’s largest capacity lithium-ion battery. The Pro815 sports a Schneider-Kreuznach lens and boasts a color data LCD screen for waist-level shooting, 2.5fps continuous mode and a wealth of photographic features.

Samsung Camera has announced that the company will release the world’s longest (15X) optical zoom 8 MP high-end digital camera, targeting enthusiast photographers, later this year. The Pro815, offers unrivalled features and performance and is beyond comparison to other cameras in the same class. This marks the pinnacle of Samsung Camera’s product range for 2005. The Samsung Pro815 is equipped with a 15X optical zoom with a focal length of 28-420mm, this means you can shoot from wide angle to telephoto with one lens. Review by Trusted Reviews

The Samsung Pro815 is a remarkable camera for a number of reasons. First, its huge 15x zoom Schneider-Kreuznach lens is the most powerful on any non-SLR digital camera. Secondly, it also has the biggest monitor on any digital camera, with a massive 3.5in screen. Thirdly, it has the largest battery of any digital camera, with 1900mAh of charge capacity. And most remarkably of all, it’s a Samsung.
That may sound a little cruel, but until last summer most of Samsung’s digital camera output had consisted entirely of the Digimax range of compacts that, while often technically competent and always reasonably priced, have been at best uninspiring, and at worst shoddily made, poorly designed and lacking in performance.

Samsung NV7 OPS Review

samsung

As the flagship of Samsung’s newly created NV series of cameras, it makes sense that the NV7 OPS is the company’s first camera to include CCD-shift optical image stabilization–Samsung calls it Optical Picture Stabilization–which should come in handy, considering the camera’s 7X optical zoom lens. The Samsung NV7 OPS is also one of two NV cameras that includes a new control system that Samsung calls Smart Touch. Rows of touch-sensitive buttons line the right and bottom sides of the camera’s 2.5-inch, 230,000-pixel LCD screen. As you pass your finger over them, various controls appear on the screen. You can select them by pressing the appropriate button, which may activate a whole new set of control possibilities for a submenu, if applicable. The system has the potential to deliver a lot of options quickly and easily, though we won’t know for sure until we get a testable unit. The Samsung NV7 OPS also includes a top ISO of 1,000 and video recording at as high as 640×480 resolution at 30fps.

Review by dpreview.com

Delivering a more advanced photographic experience for taking scenery, sports, portraits or even more challenging shots, the NV7 OPS, with 7.2 mega pixels and a 7x optical zoom, offers both the Optical Picture Stabilisation (OPS) and the Advanced Shake Reduction (ASR) processing function to deliver optimum image quality. These combined technologies enable you to take clear and natural pictures anywhere and in lower light conditions without using a flash. Additional functionality provides TV quality MPEG-4 VGA (640×480) 30 fps video recording (including zoom and pause) and a photo gallery function for convenient picture viewing with the Smart Touch interface. The NV7 OPS comes with a rechargeable battery and has a multi-charging system including USB and optional high capacity SBP-4442 battery kit.

Olympus FE-170 Review

olympus

Olympus FE-170 is a point-and-shoot digital camera (announced on 22.08.06) with 6.0 effective megapixels, 3x optical zoom (equivalent to 38 mm - 114 mm), 10 scene modes (e.g. Sports, Fireworks, Self-portrait) and 2.5″ LCD Screen. The camera is measuring 90 x 63 x 31 mm (3.5 x 2.5 x 1.2 in), weighing around 175 g (6.2 oz) and is running on two AA batteries.

Review by CNET

On paper, the Olympus FE-170 is almost identical to its brother, the FE-180. Both have the same 6-megapixel sensor, the same 38mm-to-114mm (35mm equivalent) zoom lens, and the same emphasis on simplified, automated photography. In actual use, however, the FE-170 is far inferior to its bigger brother. The approximate $30 difference between the two cameras represent some heavily cut corners in this cheaper model.

Canon PowerShot S3 IS Review

canon

The Canon PowerShot S3 IS is a 12x Optical Zoom camera (with image stabilization) with a 6 megapixel sensor that Canon is promoting as a ‘family friendly’ digital camera.
It shoots video at 30 frames per second (with stereo sound) which allows you to shoot video and take pictures simultaneously using their new MovieSnap features.
The S3 IS comes with a 2.0 inch Vari-Angle LCD and USB 2.0.

Review by DC Resource

The Canon PowerShot S3 IS ($499) is an update to last year’s very popular PowerShot S2 ultra zoom camera. The S3 isn’t a revolution compared to the S2 — in fact, the upgrades are fairly minor for the most part. New features on the S3 include:
* Uses a 6 Megapixel CCD (instead of 5MP)
* New ISO range of 80 - 800 (instead of 50 - 400); lower noise than previous sensor
* 2″ LCD display (versus 1.8″)
* Live histogram in record mode
* New widescreen (16:9) still image mode
* New Sports scene mode
* Black-colored body; slightly larger and heavier than S2
Everything else is the same as on the PowerShot S2. That means that the S3 has a 12X optical zoom lens, optical image stabilizer, rotating LCD, full manual controls, and enhanced movie mode.

Review by Megapixel.net

The Canon PowerShot S3 IS, this year’s new version of the PowerShot S2 IS, brings the inevitable increase in resolution, adding another million pixels that makes the S3 IS a 6-megapixel camera, but has only minor changes otherwise.
The image stabilized Ultrasonic 12 X zoom lens is identical to last year’s S2 IS, and so are most of the other components. Indeed, externally, the only change is a slightly beefier monitor hinge.
The PowerShot S3 IS offers a good ergonomic design, providing a deep grip with a non-skid surface on the inside where the fingertips rest, while the stubby lens barrel allows cradling the camera in the left hand.

Review by Dpreview.com

Amstelveen, The Netherlands, 21 February, 2006: Canon today announces the release of the 12x optical zoom PowerShot S3 IS. Successor to the popular PowerShot S2 IS, the latest addition to the PowerShot S-series incorporates a 6.0 Megapixel CCD sensor, Canon’s renowned optical Image Stabilizer technology and video functionality rivalling that of dedicated digital video camcorders. Sporting a striking new finish in gunmetal grey, the compact PowerShot S3 IS answers the demands of advanced photographers with several improvements over its predecessor, including an increased sensitivity range of ISO 80 to ISO 800, a larger 2.0″ vari-angle LCD screen, widescreen (16:9) recording, new movie features and an additional Sports mode.

Review by Imaging Resource

The Canon PowerShot S3 IS is the latest in an extremely popular line of long zoom cameras, following the 5.0-Mp S2 IS, the 3.2-Mp S1 IS, and the 2.6-Mp Pro90 IS.
The Canon S3 IS accommodates a wide range of users with its variable level of exposure control. Experienced shooters will appreciate the Manual, Aperture Priority, and Shutter Priority modes, while novices will find the Auto, Program AE, and Scene modes useful. With a full range of creative effects, the added attraction of 12x zoom Canon optics, and optical image stabilization — a feature found on only a handful of digital cameras, most of them more expensive, the Canon S3 IS should appear high up on the lists for photographers looking for a long-zoom camera.

Hewlett-Packard’s PhotoSmart R817 digital camera gives beginning photographers a good collection of desirable features in an extremely easy to use package. The PhotoSmart R817 is a little higher priced than other beginner digital cameras, though.
The PhotoSmart R817 offers an extensive list of features designed to simplify the process of capturing, copying, transferring, and printing photos. This digital camera’s menu system allows you to select the eventual destination for photos–e-mail, a Web site, or a printer, for example–as you shoot the photos. To further simplify the process of sharing the photos, you can purchase a docking station.

Despite the well-known instant gratification that digital photography offers, many manufacturers overlook one critical aspect: editing. Most cams can resize and recolor, but how many allow creative manipulation? Enter HP’s Photosmart R927, the latest entry in its R-series of cameras that helps you lose ten pounds—instantly! At least your photo can look that way with this camera’s Slimming effect.
The HP R927’s pedestrian form factor won’t win any design awards with its unremarkable finished metal look and somewhat bulky body, but curved edges provide a solid, comfortable grip. Dedicated buttons for on/off, playback, flash, and other options align the top of the camera. The setup is unusual but effective; everything is easy to reach with the forefingers and nonintrusive. Freed from a jumble of buttons, the back of the camera has plenty of real estate for housing an intuitive two-button navigation scheme and the massive three-inch LCD.

Casio Exilim EX-Z700 Review

casio

The EX-Z700’s Super Bright LCD is both big and bright: the 2.7-inch screen with 1200cd/m2 brightness is easy to see, even on a sunny day. At 7.2 megapixels, the high-performance EX-Z700 ensures crystal-clear image output for both printing and screen, delivering extraordinary photographic detail. The long-life battery packs enough power for around 460 still images on a single charge, and the camera comes with Casio’s Anti Shake DSP to reduce photo blur due to shaky hands or moving subjects. All in all, the EX-Z700 strikes an extremely attractive balance between slim, stylish looks and high-performance functionality.

Review by dpreview.com

Casio has announced today the new 7.2 megapixel Exilim Zoom EX-Z700. With a 3x zoom, Casio’s Anti-Shake DSP and new BEST SHOT modes including an auto framing mode and a layout shot mode. The EX-Z700 also features a large 2.7-inch LCD with 1200cd/m2 brightness which is claimed to be visible on bright sunny days.
Phil: An apology to Casio, apparently this story went up before a ‘new embargo’ which we were only told of after the first embargo had passed. Hence this story was live on our site (and had been for a few hours) when we heard of the new date, it had been up so long that there was little point taking it down. I’d like to reiterate that dpreview prides itself in never intentionally breaking embargo.

The Digital Rebel XTi is proof positive that Canon continues to lead the way with their phenomenal digital SLRs.The EOS Digital Rebel XTi has a brilliant 2.5-inch LCD monitor with approximately 230,000 pixels. All shooting and review information is accessed on the rear LCD monitor, and the wide viewing angle of 160 and brighter, easier-to-read menus give the new Rebel XTi LCD monitor an obvious advantage. The Digital Rebel XTi is the long-awaited upgrade to Canon’s very successful Digital Rebel XT (see our review). Like the XT before it, the Rebel XTi (known as the EOS-400D in some countries) is an entry-level digital SLR, but that doesn’t mean that it’s “stripped”. The Nikon Coolpix L3 is the midrange member of Nikon’s simple, inexpensive L-series digital cameras. The 5-megapixel camera sports a 3X optical zoom lens, a handful of useful scene modes, and a small price tag. It’s not the fastest, sharpest, or sleekest digital camera on the market, but this little shooter produces good-looking images for the price.
Compact and light, the L3’s silver plastic body is fairly stylish for such a low-end camera, though at just less than 1.5 inches thick, the Coolpix L3 is a little too fat to slip into your jeans. Fortunately, its light frame weighs less than six ounces even with an SD card and two AA batteries, making it comfortable to carry in a jacket or purse.

Lately, it seems as if Sony is putting out a new T-series camera every other week. The newest addition to this hip line of snapshooters is the Cyber Shot DSC-T50. Like the T30, it features a 7.2-megapixel CCD sensor; optical image stabilization; a 3X optical, 38mm-to-114mm (35mm equivalent), f/3.5-to-f/4.3 zoom lens; and sensitivity of as high as ISO 1,000. However, the instead of the T30’s 2.5-inch LCD screen, the DSC-T50 includes a 3-inch touch-screen LCD. This touch screen is the only major difference between the two models, and since Sony priced them the same, it looks like you’ll get to choose whether you want a touch screen or not.

The DSC-T50 is a beauty. I used a silver version but it’s also available in a very bright red or black. The camera measures 3.75 x 2.25 x .9 (WHD, in inches) and weighs 5.8 ounces with battery and Memory Stick Pro Duo card. I used a 1GB Sony high-speed card for the test. The front of camera is as clean as can be with understated Sony and Cybershot logos on the metal case. There’s also an eyelet for the wrist strap. Slide the front panel down and the camera powers up, exposing the 3x Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens (38-114mm 35mm equivalent), the AF Assist lamp and flash. The top of the camera is also very clean with just three buttons—the shutter, power on/off and optical image stabilization on/off. On an angled edge is the mode switch for playback, still or video shooting. The DSC-T50 takes 640 x 480 pixel clips at 30 frames per second, basically VHS levels. On the left side is a compartment for the battery that’s rated 400 shots per the CIPA standard and the memory card slot. On the bottom are a metal tripod mount, speaker and port for the special combination USB/AV/DC-in cable.

The new Sony Cybershot T50 model’s extra-large screen with intuitive menu options allow for less physical buttons on the camera body, resulting in a sleeker design.
